I guess this does not bode well for Martin Luther and Issac Watts in the Catholic hymnal. Can you chant "A Mighty Fortress is Our God"? If so I would love to hear it!
I heard an interesting tidbit on Gregorian Chanting the other day: The Pope (Gregory) thought the hymns and congregational singing in the church were poor, so he replaced congregational singing with professionally trained monks to chant. Hence, with Luther, hymns and the hoi poloi singing again really was revolutionary...
